Achievements - Dr. N.A Osei-Kuffour

Dr. Nana-Akua Osei-Kuffour is a Specialist General Surgeon with a distinguished background. She is a Fellow of The College of Surgeons of South Africa (FCS (SA)) and a member of The Association of Surgeons of South Africa (ASSA).

Her expertise encompasses a broad spectrum, with a special focus on Trauma, Upper Gastrointestinal (GI), Hepatic, Pancreatic, and Biliary (HPB), Breast, Endoscopic, and Laparoscopic surgery.

Dr. Osei-Kuffour earned her MBChB from The University of Pretoria (UP) in 2014, followed by a two-year internship at Steve Biko Academic Hospital in Pretoria in 2016. She furthered her training with a community service placement at Tembisa Tertiary Provincial Hospital in 2017, dedicating her time to the Department of General Surgery, where her passion for the field flourished.

Returning to Steve Biko Academic Hospital and the University of Pretoria in 2018 as a registrar in the Department of General Surgery, she underwent rigorous training, rotating through various hospitals within the UP-training circuit, including Steve Biko Academic Hospital, Kalafong Provincial Tertiary Hospital, Tembisa Provincial Tertiary Hospital, and 1 Military Hospital.

Dr. Osei-Kuffour’s commitment to advancing surgical knowledge was recognized during the South African Gastroenterology Society (SAGES) Congress in August 2023, where she received the prestigious “Best Oral Presentation – 1st Place” award for her MMED thesis research on the “Effect of the timing of endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography in patients with acute cholangitis at Steve Biko Academic Hospital.”

With over 7 years of surgical experience, Dr. Osei-Kuffour is known for her unwavering dedication to patient care, her motivation, and her exceptional surgical skills.

Medical Procedures :

APPENDECTOMY

An appendectomy is a common procedure done to remove the appendix when infected. This surgery can be done using minimally invasive laparoscopic techniques; however, if the appendix has burst, open surgery may be needed.

CHOLECYSTECTOMY

The cholecystectomy is the surgical removal of the gallbladder. The operation is done to remove the gallbladder due to gallstones causing pain or infection. 

HEPATIC PANCREATIC AND BINARY (HPB)

Surgery is carryout on patients who have been diagnosed with a liver, pancreatic or bile duct lesion, often referred to as HPB.

 

ENDOSCOPY

An endoscopy is a procedure where Specialists use special camera to inspect the gastrointestinal tract in order to diagnose and treat conditions in the oesophagus, stomach, duodenum and colon.

 

BREAST SURGERY
(LUMPECTOMY AND MASTECTOMY)

Lumpectomy/Breast Conservation: is the surgical procedure to remove a cancer (lump/ mass) and a rim of surrounding normal tissue leaving the majority of the breast intact.

Mastectomy is the surgical procedure to remove a cancer in the breast depending on the stages of breast cancer

LIMB AMPUTATION

limb may be amputated due to vascular disease, lower limb ischemia, peripheral arterial disease, and diabetes. Below-the-knee amputation, is a transtibial amputation that involves removing the foot, ankle joint, distal tibia, fibula, and corresponding soft tissue structures. 

HERNIA REPAIR

A hernia is repaired surgically to remove an organ that protrudes through the wall of the abdominal cavity the protruding tissue and place it back in its original position to reduce discomfort and relieve pain.

TRAUMA SURGERY

Trauma surgeons are specialists who provide emergency care for patients with severe injuries resulting from accidents, violence, or other traumatic events. They excel in assessing and managing critical conditions, performing emergency surgeries to stabilize patients, and coordinating multidisciplinary care in trauma centers or emergency departments.
